Torry Lighthouse Took to the Streets to Clean Bus Shelters

Community change often starts with one question: What can we fix today?

In Torry, a small neighbourhood in Aberdeen, that question led a local group — Torry Lighthouse — to step out into the streets and start cleaning bus shelters.

The initiative focuses on:

  • Cleaning bus shelter glass panels
  • Scrubbing graffiti where permitted
  • Sweeping floors and removing litter
  • Reporting damaged or unsafe structures to the council
  • Improving the overall look and feel of key public spaces

Volunteers worked closely with Aberdeen City Council to ensure all activities met safety and maintenance guidelines. This collaboration helped streamline the process and allowed the group to carry out the work confidently and responsibly.

Torry Lighthouse representatives shared that the aim is simple: make everyday spaces cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for everyone who lives in or travels through Torry.

Early feedback from residents has been positive, with many noting a visible improvement in the streetscape and a renewed sense of community pride.

Torry Lighthouse plans to:

  • Continue regular clean-ups
  • Expand the project to additional streets
  • Encourage more residents to join future volunteering days

The group believes that small actions can create meaningful change, especially when the community comes together.
